“The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the defense of my life; Whom shall I dread?”
Psalms 27:1 NASB1995
A Quick Word Before I Begin…
Barb and I made a vow when we first started Heaven On Wheels to never personally profit from this little ministry. That vow remains in place, but as of today, we have decided to give our readers the choice to pay for a subscription to the devotionals. That payment is simple and easy to make, and at the end of the year all of the paid subscription amounts (less processing fees) are going to a Christian charity or two that we’ll select.
We’ll never pressure you to pay for a subscription; but if the Spirit moves you to help the hungry, the homeless, and others in need, click here and change your free individual subscription to a paid one. You won’t get anything special, except the good feeling that comes from helping others. If there’s someone you think might benefit from reading these daily devotionals, you can also gift them with a paid subscription.
Thank you for considering this!
Today I’m returning to one of my favorite psalms, one that addresses the life-changing deliverance from fear that faith in God provides. Psalm 27:1 was written by King David when he was in one of his rather frequent periods of trouble. Despite a lifetime filled with troubles, David was never in darkness or unsurpassed peril. He knew that the Lord was his light and salvation.
God Himself was responsible for bringing light and salvation to the life of David, who never despaired in darkness. His life was filled with the Lord, who filled it with light. David also knew that he had been rescued by God both in terms of the present time and all time. God continually rescued David, and He promised to do so for eternity.
God — and specifically Jesus — are associated with light in the Bible, yet this is the only direct reference of the term light to God in the Old Testament. In the New Testament, John 1:5 and John 1:9 apply that term to Jesus.
In Isaiah 49:6, God promises light to the Gentiles through the person and ministry of Jesus, which is repeated in Acts 13:47:
“For so the Lord has commanded us, ‘I have placed You as a light for the Gentiles, That You may bring salvation to the end of the earth.’ ””
Acts 13:47 NASB1995
Now, David was the most skilled and experienced warrior of his time, and would have been incredibly strong in physical terms. Yet he looked to the Lord as the strength of his life.
Regardless of the adversity in your life, having God as your light, salvation and strength can keep you from fear and the dreadful feeling of being afraid.
Heaven On Wheels Daily Prayer:
Lord, You are the light that shines in my life, the light that cannot be eclipsed by darkness, the light that bring clarity to everything. You are my Savior, who died so I might live, saving me from sin and death through your death and resurrection. You have repeatedly saved me from outside harm and the mistakes I have made in my life. You are mighty and strong, protecting me from harm. Why, then, should I ever be afraid? Help me to know You and trust You so deeply that fear never has a foothold in my heart. In Jesus’ name I pray, AMEN.
You’re definitely welcome, Judy! Have a blessed day!
This is one of my favorite and go to scriptures. Thank you for the reminder!
