What is faith? It’s a question that defies understanding or explanation. Have you ever tried explaining to a nonbeliever why you have faith? If you have, you know that this question is very hard to answer.
The book of Hebrews begins with a list of examples of faith, citing those in the Old Testament whose faith in God resulted in His favor. At the very beginning are three verses that offer an explanation:
“Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see. Through their faith, the people in days of old earned a good reputation. By faith we understand that the entire universe was formed at God’s command, that what we now see did not come from anything that can be seen.”
Hebrews 11:1-3 NLT
As F.F. Bruce said, “Physical eyesight produces a conviction or evidence of visible things; faith is the organ which enables people to see the invisible order.”
That’s still not an explanation; you just need to have faith to understand what faith is.
