Wait for the Lord
Psalms 27:14 Whatever you might be going through right now, take your problems to the Lord
“Wait for the Lord; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the Lord.”
Psalms 27:14 NASB1995
Today’s short verse from Psalms focuses on three things: trust, patience, and courage. In this psalm, we don’t know exactly when King David is writing — he talks about a number of problems, including enemies, false witnesses, adversaries, and violent men. For those of you who are familiar with the Psalms of David, you’ll know that this is a common theme with the king!
This verse is at the end of this particular psalm, and it is meant to encourage others who may be going through hard times — including you and me. David knows exactly what to do from his lifetime of experience and tells us to “Wait for the LORD” (seek after God) and to “be strong and let your heart take courage” (take courage in God’s love for you).
Charles Haddon Spurgeon had these words to say about waiting for the Lord:
“Wait at his door with prayer; wait at his foot with humility; wait at his table with service; wait at his window with expectancy.” (Spurgeon)
I think you can see why Spurgeon is considered the “King of Preachers” — in one sentence, he lays out a brief four-part plan for being patient for God’s help. We are to pray, remain humble, serve Him and His people, and expect the best from our faith in Him.
Do these things, and God will “let your heart take courage.” As David Guzik says in his Enduring Word commentary,
This profound promise is for us. Across the centuries David spoke to us, telling us to be confident that there is strength in the LORD for those who seek Him and trust Him.
In other words, don’t just sit around expecting God to help you in your time of need. Getting the Lord’s assistance requires us to seek Him and rely on Him, not on ourselves. Our strength comes from relying on God; we are only weak if we don’t wait for the Lord’s help.
Whatever you might be going through right now, take your problems to the Lord. He will help you; probably not on your schedule, but in His good time.
Heaven On Wheels Daily Prayer:
Father in Heaven, I often want to fall back on my old sinful self when I ‘m in difficult times instead of abiding in You and relying on Your promises. Continue to teach me to wait for You and joyfully receive Your encouragement. You have complete and perfect control of my life, and all I need to do is wait for You to act on my behalf. I confidently wait for You with prayer, humility, thanks, and praise. AMEN.
