“Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.”
Colossians 3:2 NLT
This is a short verse, one with a laser-like focus on what we as Christians should think about.
Too many of us spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about the “things of earth” - material possessions, human relationships, and so on - rather than the “things of heaven”. Not all earthly things are evil (think kittens, puppies, flowers, sunsets and beautiful music), but spending most of your waking hours thinking about those things and excluding God is just plain wrong.
Paul’s letter to the Colossians invites us to set our minds on thinking about the triune God, how to please Him, and how to keep our minds from obsessing on worldly trivialities. That’s why a daily habit of reading the Bible, learning more about your faith, praying, confessing sins to God, honoring the Lord with worship and praise, and thanking Him for your very existence is such a good idea.
Soon you begin to realize just how trivial those “things of earth” are in comparison with the infinite love of God.
