“The Lord is my light and my salvation— so why should I be afraid? The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble?”
Psalms 27:1 NLT
The Psalms contain many such reassuring and calming words. It’s no wonder that in these times (and during most periods of human history) they have been a source of strength and solace for countless people.
There is a lot to be worried about in our present time. The possibility of nuclear war is closer than it has been for sixty years, inflation is eroding savings and confidence in the economy, even famine is on the horizon in many parts of the world.
Psalm 27 asks how any commonplace worries can stand up to the Lord. He is light, banishing the darkness of our imaginations and realities. He is our salvation, overthrowing even the fear and inevitability of death. And He is a fortress for all believers, protecting us from the marauding horde of fears that cannot penetrate the eternal walls of His love.
Whatever fears are causing you to tremble today, consider this Psalm — and others — and feel safe within the fortress of our Lord.
