Let us do good to all people
Galatians 6:9-10 These two verses stand as a reminder to continue striving for others.
“Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary. So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith.”
Galatians 6:9-10 NASB1995
Chapter 6 of Paul’s epistle to the Galatians is focused on one topic: bearing the burdens of others. He’s at the end of his letter, and is trying to emphasize one of the primary lessons that Jesus imparted to His followers — to love one another.
From the words at the start of Galatians 6:9 — “Let us not lose heart in doing good” — it’s apparent that some of the Christians in this area of what is now Turkey were starting to tire of “doing good”. I’ve seen this in many churches and volunteer organizations, where people start with good intentions and enthusiasm, but are soon disillusioned and jealous of “their time” being directed toward helping other people. It’s sad, but very true!
Paul insists that “we will reap if we do not grow weary,” words of encouragement reminding the Galatians that they need to be patient in their good works. I’ve read so many testimonies of missionaries who have gone into some of the most poverty-stricken parts of the world and felt that their work and preaching was being ignored… but after years of helping the poor and bringing the Good News to the people, they started seeing results in terms of bringing souls to Christ and seeing self-sufficiency take root. Their perseverance in the face of years of unrewarded toil paid off.
In the next verse, Paul says “So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith.” While the church has the opportunity to use its meager resources to do good, he wants them to do so — not neglecting those who are children of God.
Did you notice that Paul included himself in this verse (using “we” and “us” rather than “you” and “yourselves”)? He was not immune from being wearied by his work, and many Jewish legalists wanted him imprisoned or killed. It was important for Paul to remember not to lose heart, and to keep his eyes fixed on his final reward.
To our readers who might feel that they’re weary of doing good for others both inside and outside the church community, these two verses stand as a reminder to continue striving for others.
Heaven On Wheels Daily Prayer:
Loving Father in heaven, I want to grow in my Christian life, becoming more like Jesus with every passing day. I know this requires me to work through drudgery and disappointment, and I pray that I will endure in my tasks with the patience and strength that comes from You alone. May I never lose heart or grow weary doing the good works You prepared me to do with the spiritual gifts You provided. I know that if I stay the course and never give up, I will reap the reward that You have promised. I pray this in the name of my Savior Jesus Christ, AMEN.
