Today we’re studying a psalm of David. Chapter 18 of Psalms begins with the preface “For the director of music. Of David the servant of the Lord. He sang to the Lord the words of this song when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul,” providing those who sang the psalm in David’s time as well as those who cherish these words today with some context for what he set down in words and music.
David knew from his experiences that God’s “way is perfect,” and that His “Word is flawless.” Another David, Bible commentator David Guzik of Enduring Word, illuminates us with this commentary on the verse:
c. His way is perfect; the word of the LORD is proven: David spoke of the great things he could do as empowered by God, but he came back to the thought of the greatness of God. He considered the perfection of His way, and the proven character of His word.
i. The word of the LORD is proven: “Literally tried in the fire. It has stood all tests; and has never failed those who pleaded it before its author.” (Clarke)
ii. David could say “the word of the LORD is proven” from his personal experience. The word given to David – that he would be the next king of Israel, plus hundreds of smaller promises – had been proven true.
iii. Many do not know this from their own experience because they will never allow themselves to be put in a situation where God must prove His word true. David knew the truth of this from the extreme circumstances of his life.
David is telling us through his song and personal witness that God is the ultimate wellspring of moral strength, refuge, and power, guiding us through all challenges and saving us with His protection.
For all who “take refuge in Him,” David tells us that God “shields all” with His protection. Throughout Scripture, we read passages describing the Lord as “a fortress” or “a strong tower,” further evidence that like David, we will find safety and security from danger when we run to Him.
Note that David highlights the perfection of both God’s word and His way in this verse, pointing out the unwavering nature of His guidance. The truth we find in His Word never varies, and it offers us a way to bypass life’s tribulations on a path of security and sanctuary.
Many of the Psalms foreshadow the reign of Jesus, and in this case we can be reminded of His words from John 15:4 when He invited followers to abide and remain in Him. That invitation promises believers a level of spiritual refuge and salvation that lasts for an eternity.
