Hebrews: The Lord is Creator and Eternal
Hebrews 1:10-12; Psalm 102:25-27 - Time is fleeting, except for the Creator and Sustainer of Eternity!
“And,
“You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth,
And the heavens are the works of Your hands;
They will perish, but You remain;
And they all will become old like a garment,
And like a mantle You will roll them up;
Like a garment they will also be changed.
But You are the same,
And Your years will not come to an end.””
Hebrews 1:10-12 NASB1995
God is continuing to speak about the Son in verses 10-12. Note the connecting “And” at the beginning of this passage, which links it to the previous verses. He adds on to the previous passages to distinguish the Son from angels. The author of Hebrews is quoting Psalm 102, that describes God, to describe the Christ. Here is the related passage from that Psalm:
“Of old You founded the earth,
And the heavens are the work of Your hands.
Even they will perish, but You endure;
And all of them will wear out like a garment;
Like clothing You will change them and they will be changed.
But You are the same,
And Your years will not come to an end.”
Psalms 102:25-27 NASB1995
He is our creator and sustains His creation, but the creation will become old like a worn garment and He can roll it up at His will and create a new universe, a new Earth! But He remains the same, yesterday, today and forever. Here is what Enduring Word says about this passage:
You, LORD, in the beginning: Psalm 102:25-27 shows that the Son is not only called God, but also LORD (Yahweh). Then the Son is described with attributes and terms that belong only to God.
You, LORD, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth: This shows that Jesus Christ, the Second Person of the Trinity, is the Creator. Yahweh is specifically said to be the Creator (Isaiah 45:12, Isaiah 45:18).
They will perish, but You will remain: This shows that Jesus Christ, the Second Person of the Trinity is self-existent, even as Psalm 102:25-27 says this of Yahweh.
Like a cloak You will fold them up, and they will be changed: This shows that Jesus Christ, the Second Person of the Trinity is sovereign, with authority over all creation and history, even as Psalm 102:25-27 says this of Yahweh.
You are the same: This shows that Jesus Christ, the Second Person of the Trinity is immutable, unchanging, and eternal (Your years will not fail). Psalm 102:25-27 says this of Yahweh and the writer to the Hebrews says that it clearly applies to Jesus as well.
This theme of the unchanging Christ is explored further in later chapters of Hebrews. In fact, chapter 13 is entitled “The Changeless Christ” so we will study this further as we proceed through Hebrews.
Our physical universe is constantly changing and entropy is growing. According to physicists,
Assuming that a finite universe is an isolated system, the second law of thermodynamics states that its total entropy is continually increasing. It has been speculated, since the 19th century, that the universe is fated to a heat death in which all the energy ends up as a homogeneous distribution of thermal energy so that no more work can be extracted from any source.
NOTE: Like anything explored by physics, there are some uncertainties about our universe being an isolated system.
Left untouched, things that we have built rust, rot and fall apart. Plants grow, wither and die. Animals and humans also die. Mountain ranges erode away. The Sun will eventually run out of fuels for its fusion process. But He goes on! And those who believe in Him will go on, too! He can change the universe into something new like rolling up a garment and creating a new one.
I like this F.B. Meyer Daily Homily, found on Precept Austin:
Thou art the same, when contrasted with nature. — The solid bases of the hills were laid in their sockets by thy hands. The blue tapestry of the sky was woven by thy fingers; and it is as easy for Thee to lay it aside and substitute new heavens as for us to lay aside a worn-out dress and take another. And as the change of dress does not affect the nature of the wearer, neither will all the changes of creation or nature affect the power of thine hand or the tenderness of thy heart. Thou art the same!
Thou art the same, when contrasted with men. — They come and go. The great ones of the past — Abraham, Moses, David, Elijah — stood with Thee for a moment on the earth, and then passed into the great silence. Augustine, Luther, Calvin, Knox, wrought for Thee and with Thee, and passed away. Our own teachers and friends have not been suffered to continue by reason of death. One by one they have passed from us; but Thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail!
Thou art the same, when contrasted with our own moods and impulses. — They are too fitful; like the morning dew; like the evening wind. Sometimes we feel we could die for Thee; at other times we sleep amid thy sorrows. Emotions, resolutions, methods of thought and action, are permanent only in their changefulness. But Thou art the same — changeless and timeless, our Rock of Ages, our impregnable Fortress and Home!
This was the import of the Burning Bush which flamed out on the hillside in the dark night, but did not burn to the ground. Steadily, constantly, fiercely, the fire shone, but needed no fuel from the tree — symbol of the I AM. (Meyer, F. B. Our Daily Homily).
Such words of comfort! My next devotional examines the remaining two verses of Hebrews 1 (13-14), The Son sits at God’s right hand.
Heaven on Wheels Daily Prayer:
Dear Lord - It is of the utmost comfort to know that You are the same yesterday, today and forever. Our time in the physical universe is fleeing and decaying, but You can replace it in an instant as Creator. So grateful! Amen.
