Hebrews - A Final Overview
The center of our existence, now and forevermore, is Jesus!
My devotional series on the epistle of Hebrews is complete! This is one of the most challenging books of the Bible that I have tackled and that includes my previous dive into the book of Daniel. The author of Hebrews is unknown, although many believe this epistle was written by Paul (possibly based on a sermon) or Luke or one of the other disciples of Paul. My personal opinion is that the epistle was written by someone who knew Paul and also was a converted Jew who was familiar with the details about the Old Covenant and how OT scripture points to Jesus.
This was the Ninth full book of the Bible that I have explored (not counting three Psalms); the other books I’ve explored that are found Heaven on Wheels include:
Daniel
Jonah
Acts
Galatians
Philippians
James
1 John
1 Peter
The three Psalms:
Psalm 22
Psalm 23
Psalm 34
Before I started doing full books, I did devotionals on various topics:
Miracles of Jesus (all Gospels)
Parables of Jesus (all Gospels)
Sermon on the Mount (Matthew)
Romans 8
Christmas and Holy Week scripture
1 Corinthians 13
The “I AM” statements of Jesus from the Gospel of John
As I noted in my last devotional, I started this deep dive into Hebrews on September 29, 2025, publishing a new article every other day until the last regular devotional on March 10, 2026, for a total of 82 posts if I counted correctly. According to this chart I saw on Facebook, you can supposedly read Hebrews in 45 minutes if you want to devote a little more time to what you read (rather than skimming it):
I have also included a summary chart of Hebrews from Precept Austin and a list of things I learned or discovered from Hebrews along with an overview of each chapter. The overviews have a key verse and each devotional title, the scripture references in that devotional (Hebrews and many others) and the salient idea or ideas that I use at the top of devotional to summarize the text.

What I Learned:
The author of Hebrews approaches his theological arguments from the perspective that the believers fundamentally know that God exists.
Hebrews is directed at early church Jewish believers, who were concerned about persecution and wanted to return the safety of their old beliefs.
The attributes of the Son of God are explored in-depth using typology (pointing to Jesus through types), systematic theology (linked ideas) and OT prophecy.
Faith is explored extensively in Hebrews, using many OT examples of faith in God’s future promises, including Abel, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and others.
The urgency of believing is emphasized again and again, noting that today may be the last day (for an individual or for all of us). We should always be looking forward to the heavenly city.
Jesus is compared many times to the OT priest from Salem (Jerusalem) — Melchizedek — (Genesis 14:18-20) and not to the Levite priests.
The OT priests and their methods were flawed in many ways but perfect Jesus is the tabernacle, the cross is our altar, and He is the path directly to the mercy seat of God.
The Old Covenant has been replaced by the superior New Covenant that is brought to us by Christ.
Hebrews relies on repetition to get points firmly established in the minds of believers.
Falling away is a difficult concept explored in Hebrews and gives those, like me, who were supposedly believers and left the faith at one time (and then returned) some areas of real concern to pray about.
We are to stand fast and offer a sacrifice of praise in all circumstances. Our circumstances may change, but Jesus does not change.
We are called to brotherly love, hospitality, commitment to marriage, contentment, and to honor and pray for our spiritual leaders.
Disobedience and disbelief are the same things.
The New Covenant is one time, once for all!
