Today’s devotional is rather short and very much to the point. Solomon, the man of wisdom who studied the human condition and wrote Proverbs in an attempt to pass along those nuggets of wisdom, is also thought to be The Teacher, the author of Ecclesiastes.
While I always find Proverbs to be rather upbeat, Ecclesiastes has many overtones of hopelessness and futility. Bible Hub provides this overview of the book:
Ecclesiastes explores the meaning of life and the futility of worldly pursuits, emphasizing that all is like a vapor without God. The author reflects on the fleeting nature of wealth, wisdom, and pleasure. Ultimately, he concludes that the true purpose of life is to fear God and keep His commandments.
As we look at the first part of the verse, we read a reflection on the theme of the Book of Ecclesiastes: How the pursuit of wisdom and understanding can open one’s eyes to the complexity of life and its injustices. Solomon had much more knowledge than just about anyone in his time, and sadly that made the sorrows and weight of human existence quite visible to him.
Throughout the Bible we see similar logic from a number of other authors — wisdom is valuable, but it usually reveals the fallen nature of the world. Solomon isn’t just expressing his personal sorrow, but reflecting that it is a common condition of humanity to gain wisdom, then realize the vanity and temporary nature of worldly pursuits.
The commentary from The Bible Says explains this wonderfully:
The whole book of Proverbs, much of which was authored by Solomon, is based on the premise that the “naïve youth” can become wise by listening to the instruction of wisdom instead of defaulting into the destructive experience of folly. Since Solomon is claiming in clear terms to write from the standpoint of wisdom, he can’t be saying there is no difference between wisdom and folly. More likely Solomon is giving us two opposites to convey the entirety of human understanding. And nothing within the entirety of human reason can explain the purpose for humanity on the earth. It is futile to try. Solomon knows, because he tried.
Ecclesiastes gives us the benefit of realizing that if Solomon couldn’t do it, then it can’t be done. Which saves us the futility of having to do it ourselves. However, it seems all of us try anyway. But if we compare the experience we have with Solomon’s insights, we can skip ahead to the conclusion, and save ourselves from striving after the wind. As we increase wisdom we will also increase grief. And increasing knowledge results in increasing pain. It seems the main thing wisdom brings is a greater awareness of the futility of striving to know and understand life’s purpose based on human reason and experience.
Enduring Word’s David Guzik provides this insight into the verse:
c. For in much wisdom is much grief, and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow: The more the Preacher understood life under the sun, the greater his despair. The more he learned, the more he realized what he didn’t know. The more he knew, the more he knew life’s sorrows.

The overreaching theme of the Bible is that life is futile without God. We see this later at the end of this book in Ecclesiastes 12:13-14, where Solomon — the Teacher — sums it all up:
“Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.”
Is there hope beyond the grief that seems to permeate this world? Yes, we have hope through Christ’s redemptive work on the cross.

Father in Heaven, grant to me the wisdom to discern truth in my life, and also help me to embrace the grief that comes with deeper understanding of the human condition. Teach me to always remember that increased knowledge may bring sorrow, but also offers me the opportunity to grow in my love for You and my fellow man. Guide me always to balance my pursuit of Your wisdom with the understanding that with wisdom comes challenges. May I find comfort in Your presence as I navigate through this complex life, AMEN.
