Today’s verse comes about halfway through the Book of Genesis. I had to laugh during the sermon at our church last week, when our pastor mentioned the “Bible In One Year” challenges that so many people do (we used to…). He pointed out that most people make it through Genesis, but then usually start slowing down during Exodus and Leviticus, and feel overwhelmed by the time they arrive at Numbers and Deuteronomy. If you’ve made it through all of those early books of the Bible multiple times, consider yourself blessed!
At this point in Genesis, the Lord appears to Isaac, the son of Abraham. There’s a famine (not the same famine that occurred during Abraham’s time) going on, and Isaac decides to visit Abimelek, king of the Philistines in Gerar. At the same time, God tells Isaac to stay where he is for a while, and the Lord will be with him and bless him. The blessing? “For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham.” (Genesis 26:3)
The blessing continues with today’s verses, promising to make Isaac’s “descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and will give them all these lands, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed”. That is a very promising blessing from the Lord, so Isaac decides to stay… and promptly offends Abimelek to the point that the king asks him to move his people out of the town.
So there’s the context for these verses; now, let’s dive into each one. Verse 4, in which the Lord promises to bless Isaac’s descendants, is something that should sound familiar to those who have followed the history of Isaac’s father Abraham. The Lord made the same covenant with Abraham in Genesis 22:17-18, and it foreshadows the ultimate blessing found in Jesus Christ, the redeemer to all nations (as explained in the New Testament in Galatians 3:14-16).
Now it must have seemed odd to Isaac (being a human being, of course) for the Lord to reassure him that “I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky” when Isaac only had two sons at the time. But he had already seen God’s purpose for his lineage demonstrated numerous times, so Isaac must have known that God would continue his line, regardless of famine, war, human weakness or barrenness. Israel would grow into a great nation, a sure demonstration of God’s faithfulness to His covenant.
God’s covenant also promised that He would “give your descendants all these lands”. Those lands included Canaan, which God had pledged to Abraham and his descendants. Isaac still didn’t have control of Canaan, but he lived in it through God’s promise. The fulfillment of the grant of Canaan wouldn’t be fulfilled until Joshua’s conquest later on in the Bible, as described in the Book of Joshua. For the chosen people who remembered the words that God spoke to Abraham and Isaac, the ultimate conquest of Canaan would have been seen as confirmation that God always keeps His promises.
We know from our reading of the Old Testament that the people of Israel were not always secure in their homeland, usually because they angered God by intermarrying with other nations or worshipping idols. But His faithful love of His people would always be shown, and is still being shown through the promise of the eternal homeland God has prepared for us.
God gives an explanation of His faithfulness to Isaac in verse 5 — “because Abraham obeyed me and did everything I required of him, keeping my commands, my decrees and my instructions.” God always honors obedience. Abraham was faithful to God to the point of nearly sacrificing Isaac in Genesis 22:2. By expressing his faith in God through his actions, he established a pattern that Isaac could follow.
Genesis 26:5 created a legacy of faith that (despite detours brought on by unfaithful humans!) continues through the generations. The covenant shaped the history of Israel, and pointed the way to the life, death, and resurrection of Christ, and the promise of salvation to all who believe.
