God loves to speak to me at the right time with the right words. This morning, I was sitting out on a balcony enjoying a pleasant day in Santa Fe, New Mexico and feeling a bit down for something I had done. I decided to do my daily Bible In One Year reading, and what jumped out at me but this line from Romans:
“I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong.”
Romans 7:21 NLT
In Romans 7, Paul examines both the law and the nature of sin. He knows what it is to “do right”, but finds it difficult to actually do so! How many of us have experienced the same feeling, knowing that what we are doing isn’t right, but feeling powerless to do the right thing?
As C.S. Lewis put it, “No man knows how bad he is until he has tried to be good.” It’s human nature to sin, and it is when become more attuned to the Word of God that we realize what sinful wretches we really are!
Being a Christian doesn’t mean that we should be constantly depressed by our sinful nature as exposed by the law; rather, rejoice that we have the opportunity to give our lives wholly to Jesus, become more like Him, and let Him battle sin through our lives!
