Through January 6, I’ll be posting devotionals with an Advent and Epiphany theme to focus our minds on the nativity of Jesus Christ. Merry Christmas!
“For he remembered his sacred promise to his servant Abraham. So he brought his people out of Egypt with joy, his chosen ones with rejoicing.”
Psalms 105:42-43 NLT
Psalms 105 and 106 were written by David as “bookends” describing the long, complex relationship between God and His chosen people. Of the two, Psalm 105 is a joyful song of God’s faithfulness and power, while Psalm 106 takes a more a more somber tone outlining the long history of continuous and repeated failure and rebellion by His people.
The Psalm begins with a call to the people of Israel to give thanks to the Lord, then moves on to reminding them of God’s care for them under the Patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in particular). At this point of the Psalm, David reminds the reader of God’s deliverance of the people of Israel from Egypt, and His guidance and provision during the years of wandering the wilderness.
All of God’s faithfulness to Israel was a fulfillment of His holy promise, taking them out of Egypt, through the wilderness, and eventually into Canaan. God’s promises bind Him, and the promises are holy.
Not only were the Israelites joyful at their deliverance from Egypt, but Yahweh — the covenant God — was pleased as well. He rescued them from their servitude and brought them into their inheritance.
We know that our God always remembers His promises to His people. He is deserving of our continuous praise and worship during the holidays and every day!
Heaven On Wheels Daily Prayer:
God, we praise the unfailing goodness and love You have shown to Your people. You always come to our rescue, and Your love sustains us through both good and bad times. You have encouraged, strengthened, and blessed us through illness, accidents, disappointments, and deaths. In the times we turned our backs on You, You waited for us to return so You could welcome us back with open arms. We’ve known Your love in the past, allowing us to approach the future without fear. We know we can trust in that unfailing love and that You will guide us in the days ahead. In Jesus’ holy name we pray, AMEN.
