“As soon as He was approaching, near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen, shouting: “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord; Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
Luke 19:37-38
Humans are fickle. Many in this same crowd, who greeted Jesus with acclamation on Palm Sunday as He rode into Jerusalem on a lowly colt, turned on Him at the end of that same week demanding His crucifixion. We tend to follow the crowd in so many ways, looking for the next “shiny object” or cause to latch onto, ignoring the fundamental truths of our place in God’s heart. This humble ride into the Holy City at the beginning of the Holy Week fulfilled the prophesies of Isaiah and Zechariah.
According to Easton’s Bible Dictionary, palm leaves signify victory and the crowd outside Jerusalem on that long-ago day beginning the week of Passover wanted a Messiah that would conquer the hated Roman conquerors and restore an Earthly throne of David. But this Messiah, the Son of man and God, had a completely different plan in mind, one that would require His betrayal, abandonment, trial, torture, agonizing death and glorious resurrection to take on the sins of that fickle humanity and give us a path to TRUE eternal glory through Jesus the Christ. We just have to believe to receive this free gift of forgiveness and eternal life.
Hosanna in the highest!!!
