“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.”
Proverbs 17:22 NLT
Most of us have experienced those times where our spirits are broken. It seems as if nothing is going right or will ever be better again, and it drains our strength. Having gone through bouts of depression in my life, I know that feeling all too well — you feel exhausted, worn out, and you don’t want to do anything or talk to anyone.
This simple verse from Proverbs tells a powerful truth; a kind or happy word from another person can help lift your spirits, shining a beam of warm, pure light into your inner darkness. A sincere smile or kind word from someone else changes your entire outlook.
I looked through a few dozen photos to find one that fit today’s verse, and seeing so many genuine smiles made me happier. If a photograph can make a person feel joy, the presence of another cheerful soul can really make a difference!
Be God’s beacon of light, especially during these cold, short days of winter.

Lord, you give me many great things each and every day. As your disciple, help me to share the medicine of a cheerful heart. Be with me wherever I may go today, helping me to spread cheer to others. Let your joy shine through me to give light to others! AMEN.
